When searching for Manual Wheelchairs, one of the best tools to utilize is the internet. From there you can find a wealth of information, but do you really want to purchase one online, from a provider you don't know, probably in another state? After all, there are many issues to think about, are wheelchairs covered by Medicare or my Insurance Company, if so, do I qualify? Do I really want to purchase a wheelchair without being properly fitted, or properly trained? If it breaks down or I have questions or issues, can I really count on that provider, in another state to service my manual wheelchair, or will they have me take it to my local provider for service? The place I should have went originally. These are just a few of the questions you need to ask yourself before making an investment or have your insurance company make an investment on your behalf before purchasing online.
When selecting a wheelchair, your local Home Medical Equipment Provider in conjunction with your Physician can best describe what model or type fits you best. Never purchase a wheelchair without being properly fitted, not only for the width, but for the footrest height as well. Some different type of Wheelchairs are:
Standard Wheelchair - Standard wheelchairs are available in 16", 18" and 20" widths and weigh on the average at least 35 lbs. plus the riggings, and are available in either full length or desk length arms. Desk length arms are designed to fit underneath a table or desk, it allows the patient to maintain a close distance to the table.
Transport Wheelchair - Transport wheelchairs are just as the name states, they are perfect to transport a person around their home, or to and from a car. Transport wheelchairs do not have the large self-propelling wheels in the back like a standard wheelchair, but have four smaller wheels so the patient can be pushed by a caregiver. They are typically narrower and have a lighter weight than a standard wheelchair, which makes it the ideal chair when a patient is unable to self propel and the caregiver has to lift it in and out of a trunk and maneuver the chair in the home.
Lightweight Wheelchair - A lightweight wheelchair is medically necessary for patients when a patient cannot propel themselves in a standard wheelchair, but is able in a lightweight wheelchair. Note - A lightweight wheelchair is not covered because a caregiver has difficulty lifting (due to weight) a standard wheelchair. A lightweight wheelchair typically weighs between 28 and 34 pounds without the leg riggings.
Heavy Duty Wheelchair - A heavy duty wheelchair is medically necessary if the patient weighs in excess of 250 lbs. or the patient has severe spasisticity.
Remember, the best place to purchase your manual wheelchair is from a local supplier in your home town. Just enter your ZIP code to be taken to a home medical equipment dealer in your area.
